As the seasons shift, May becomes a moment to realign. A month where energy and stillness naturally meet. In this blog, I’m sharing small rituals, seasonal habits, and simple ways to bring balance into everyday life. From nourishing drinks and growing your own ingredients to thoughtful gifting and staying active, all with a focus on slowing down while still embracing everything this time of year has to offer 🌿
A fresh start to the season
King’s Day is behind us, and with that it truly feels like the warmer season has begun ☀️ The first sunny days, longer evenings and spontaneous plans are slowly finding their way back into our routines. It is the perfect time for homemade cocktails in the garden or on the balcony, and with summer approaching, also for fresh, healthy juices that give you just a little extra.
A simple orange juice can easily be elevated with a pinch of turmeric. Add a touch of black pepper and you help activate the beneficial compounds even more. The result is a drink that feels warming and slightly spiced, while also being known for its anti inflammatory properties. A small ritual that supports your body as it adjusts to a season full of movement and energy.
Because let’s be honest, longer days often mean more of everything. More time outside, more social plans, and sometimes more celebrations 🍸 And that is perfectly fine, as long as there is room for balance.

Growing your own, starting small
Turmeric is often seen as the sister of ginger, and for good reason. Both roots add warmth and depth to flavors and have a long history in natural wellbeing. Ginger is perfect for making strong, refreshing shots, ideal to start your day. What many people do not realize is that you can also grow ginger yourself at home. With a bit of patience and the right conditions, it can even develop into a surprisingly beautiful plant.
Using the Botanian grow pots makes it easy to create a good starting point. Fill them with the quick soil mix pellets, add a piece of ginger, and give it time. It is a small process, but one that brings you closer to the origin of your food 🌱

Thoughtful gifting for small spaces
This idea came back to me when one of my best friends recently bought an apartment in the city center. Everything within walking distance, from coffee spots to small local stores. For her housewarming, I wanted to give something that would truly be used. In a smaller space, things can quickly feel cluttered, so I chose a basket filled with practical but thoughtful items. A piece of high quality Parmesan from the local cheese shop, a good bottle of olive oil, sea salt in a small handcrafted bowl, a beautiful carafe with rich balsamic vinegar, and to complete it, a mini greenhouse with seeds included.
Because even in a compact space, there is always room for something that grows.

Flavouring your everyday
With a mini greenhouse, you create a warm and sheltered environment where herbs and small plants can start to grow. Think of basil, thyme or rosemary, perfect to use later in homemade infused oils. By letting herbs rest in a good olive oil for some time, their flavors slowly release, creating a subtle richness that can elevate any salad or dish. These are small, simple rituals, but they bring a sense of calm and intention into everyday life.
Movement and recovery
For me, this month is also about movement. Early April traditionally marks the Marathon of Rotterdam, often called the most beautiful one. While I did not run myself and stayed on the sidelines to cheer, the atmosphere is truly something special. The energy of the runners and the crowd is contagious 🏃♀️ It even made me consider joining the 10 kilometer race next year.
But with more movement comes the need to take better care of your body. Rest days, nourishing meals and enough protein all play an essential role in recovery. This is where everything comes together. Energy and rest, effort and care.
Maybe that is what May is really about. Finding that balance, while everything around you is coming to life 🌿 Just as a true Botanian would.
